Spicy Popcorn

Spicy Popcorn 3Today is #TrickorTreatTuesday so I am going to tell you how to make popcorn, from scratch. What’s so tricky about popcorn? Just keep reading!

Popcorn is a great, wholesome treat you (and your kids) can enjoy. Popcorn is considered a whole grain so a 1 oz serving (or 3 cups of popped popcorn) can fulfill your daily 6 to 8 ounce serving requirement of whole grains. But, here’s the trick. Did you know many of the microwaveable varieties contain artificial preservatives, trans fats and high amounts of sodium?

#BeHealthy Tip:  Preservatives such as TBHQ (or tertiary butylhydroquinone, that’s a mouthful) are used to prevent the product from going rancid. When consumed in high amounts, these preservatives can lead to unpleasant side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness.

Trans fat is also found in many of these products even if the food label doesn’t say so. Any product with “partially hydrogenated oils” in the ingredient list contains some amount of trans fat, regardless of the serving size. Trans fat has been linked with heart disease so limiting all trans fat consumption is crucial.

Many microwaveable popcorn products also contain high amounts of sodium. We know sodium has been linked to high blood pressure so if you’re looking to reduce your sodium intake, controlling the salt in your popcorn can be a safe choice.

Now I know most people are not going to consume 10 cups of microwaveable popcorn a day, but wouldn’t you want to reduce the amount of preservatives, trans fat, and sodium you would consume in general? Plus, making popcorn is super easy. All you need is some popcorn kernels, a paper bag, and seasonings.

Spicy Popcorn

Serves 1

1 ½ corn kernels
a small paper bag
¼ tsp chili powder (or jalapeno powder)
¼ tsp garlic powder
¼ tsp onion powder
dash of salt (or garlic salt)
cooking spray

  1. Place kernels and salt in paper bag. Fold opening of bag over a few times to seal it in.
  2. Place in microwave for 1 to 2 minutes on HIGH. Listen to popping kernels and remove from microwave when popping intervals have slowed to 1 second.
  3. Remove from microwave, open bag and spray with cooking spray a couple of times. Shake bag to coat popcorn then sprinkle spices and shake bag again.
